IT IS WRITTEN
Introduction
Jesus often quoted scriptures. Of course, his “scriptures” were what we call the Old Testament today. Instead of citing chapters and verses, since those weren’t added to the text until centuries after Jesus’ life, he would simply reference his scripture quotations by saying, “It is written…” Jesus’ life and his use of scripture point out the foundational connection between the two testaments.
This scripture reading program is designed to help you get the connection between the Old Testament and the New Testament. Having spent most of 2005 reading through the New Testament with “Hidden in my Heart,” for 2006 we offer this reading program which concentrates mostly on the Old Testament, with New Testament readings strategically placed to help make clear the intertestamental connections. Many thanks to Cindy Venable for her work in putting together the reading schedule.
As you read, keep in mind the fact that the Holy Spirit wants to address you personally through the scriptures. In order to hear what God is saying to you, I suggest a three-step approach to the Bible. First, pay close attention to the words of the text. What, exactly, does it say? Refuse to read anything into the text that isn’t clearly there.
Second, try to understand what the passage meant when it was written – in its original historical setting, to its original readers. What were they facing? What did they know that we can’t know?
Third, after paying close attention to what the passage says and what it meant when originally produced, try to understand what it means to you today.
So, these are your questions for reflection to use with each daily reading:
1. What does the text say?
2. What did it mean when it was first written and read?
3. What does it mean to me today?
Let these questions guide your reflection and journaling. As you journal, put down any person or event from the reading that you connected with during the reading and reflect on how this scripture speaks to your relationship with God, or how it guides you into God’s plans for your life.
May God bless you and instruct you as you experience “It Is Written.”
